UPDATE, March 11, from a reader: A Navy pilot, I stood on the shoreline at Barrow, Alaska, July 4, 1946, the arctic ice sheet touching the shore, and stepped onto it after photographing three Eskimo young women dressed in their finest furs. I have that photo still, a Kodachrome slide. Any doubt the ice is gone, and going, is zero!...and is confirmed by polar sat. photos. Ron Johns in Hebron, NH
